Anyway, for the first assignment, I had to select two words which best complete the sentence 'I love/hate _______", and design my name in such a way that it communicates the words.
There I was, in the lecture theatre, my mind busy buzzing away at the possibilties. Eventually I realised that I had to (1) choose words that were visually strong, and (2) choose words that I could actually draw, both by hand and on a computer. (I definitely wanted to keep my designs as simple as possible.)
So, very reluctantly, I mentally tossed away 'coffee' (would probably look like tar or ink), and 'music' (not that it's a difficult word to use, but I'm sure everyone other person taking this class is going to use it). As for what I hate, everything I came up with was just too abstract to communicate visually within the constraints eg. 'bad drivers', 'stinky breath'.
I finally settled on 2 'loves', books and traveling, and came up with 4 conceptualizations of each:

"I love books."

"I love traveling."
Comments from classmates and friends
A1: Most got the idea that I like to read, which is not quite right. The point is that I like books - I like reading them and collecting them, by series or by author.
A2: No one had any idea what the black blobs were. And to be honest, neither do I...
A3: This was my personal favourite. Many thought this one conveyed the idea the best, but could use some refinement. I chose this one for further development.
A4: Some liked this idea, and some not. Those that didn't like the design said it was too uninspired.
B1: I liked this one a lot, but no one could tell the suitcases formed the letters of my name.
B2: I was inspired by the Air Nippon Airways TV ad that showed flight paths blooming from Japan. Many liked this idea too, so I chose this one.
B3: This one looked more like holidaying or relaxing by the pool.
B4: This one was silly - the 'd' is a train, the 'A' is a Concorde's (an airplane) nose, and 'N' is a sailboat. No one got this on either.
Thusly, A3 and B2 were selected for further development.
